NASA Highlights Steeply Tilted Rock Layers at California's Vasquez Rocks

Sedimentary rock layers at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area in Southern California rise out of the Soledad Basin at unusually steep angles [2]. Geologists put the average tilt of the area's rock strata at about 50 degrees, giving many formations the appearance of pointing skyward [2]. The outcrops have been used as a filming location by television and film productions, including the Star Trek franchise dating back to its first season, when the character Captain James T. Kirk was shown climbing the rocks [2].
