FEMA Approves Federal Firefighting Funds for Hawk Fire Near Reno

FEMA's Region 9 Regional Administrator authorized federal funds to help Nevada fight the Hawk Fire in Washoe County, after the state requested a Fire Management Assistance Grant on Aug. 22 [1]. The fire started Aug. 22, had burned more than 1,000 acres, threatened about 1,500 homes near northwest Reno, and prompted mandatory evacuations of roughly 3,500 people [1]. The grants cover up to 75 percent of eligible firefighting costs [1]. FEMA approved a similar grant days earlier for the Mukluk Fire in Alaska on Aug. 17, 2026 [3].
