Survey Finds Many Families Have Not Discussed Inheritance Plans

Kiplinger published guidance urging parents to weigh ongoing costs such as property taxes, insurance, maintenance and repairs before leaving a home to their children, along with how siblings would handle keeping, selling or living in the property [1]. A survey conducted for Kiplinger found that about 56% of parents said they had talked with their children about inheritance, compared with 39% of adult children [2]. Roughly 40% of both parents and children said they were unsure about estate tax questions [2]. The survey, which covered 5,000 Americans, examined how families are planning for a large generational transfer of wealth [3].
