Houston native Regan Hutsell crowned 99th Miss America

Regan Hutsell, a Houston native who competed as the 89th Miss Texas, was crowned Miss America on Sunday at the 99th national competition in West Palm Beach, Fla. [1][2] The event followed two days of preliminary competitions with 52 delegates from the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, though one account described the title as coming after a week of competition [1][2]. The Miss America Organization said Hutsell is the fourth Miss Texas to win the national title in 105 years, and People Magazine reported she is the first Texan to win since Shirley Cothran in 1975 [1]. Before competing, Hutsell worked as a professional dancer, including as a Radio City Rockette and as a ballerina with the Birmingham Royal Ballet, experiences she connected to her Community Service Initiative [2].
