Steeply Tilted Rock Layers at California's Vasquez Rocks Draw Filmmakers

Sedimentary rock outcrops at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area in Southern California rise from the arid Soledad Basin at unusually steep angles [2]. Geologists put the average tilt of the area's rock strata at about 50 degrees, giving many formations the appearance of pointing skyward [2]. The site has been used as a filming location by the Star Trek franchise since its first season, including a scene involving Captain James T. Kirk [2].
