Pacific Storms Active as Atlantic Stays Quiet Near Hurricane Season Peak

Spring 2026 seasonal outlooks tied a developing El Niño to forecasts of below-normal Atlantic activity and above-normal activity in the northeastern and central Pacific, and as of September 3 the Northeast Pacific had produced 15 named storms and six hurricanes, above the norm for that point in the season, while the Atlantic remained quiet [1]. A hurricane warning was in effect for the Hawaiian islands of Kauai and Niihau as Hurricane Lowell, a Category 3 storm with 115 mph winds moving north-northeast at 15 mph as of Monday morning local time, approached; a tropical storm warning covered Oahu, according to the National Hurricane Center [5]. Lowell was reported as the third storm in just over three weeks to target Hawaii [5]. Forecasters in Houston said no Atlantic tropical development was expected within seven days, noted it was the third consecutive year without a named storm over Labor Day weekend since the 1930s, and pointed to higher rain chances Wednesday and Thursday from tropical moisture moving in from Florida, with the season's peak on September 11-12 [3][4].
